Chapter 26: A Meeting and Return

The next morning, there was a council meeting between the king, the Ministers, and other members of the council, as well as the captain of the Royal Knights, Vlad Cushions. A long table in a nearly soundproof room with several seats of chairs awaited them as each person came inside and took their seat. Several important members of the Church of the Virtuous Gods were invited—among them the Archbishop who oversaw all church activity in the kingdom. He, however, declined to attend.

In any case, the Crown planned to make the information about a third Authority known to the public as a way to bolster morale and support for the military. Above all, the king wanted to make it easier for mothers and fathers sending their Talented children to the front lines. Reassurance, that in as little as a few years, the multi-race alliance against the demons in the eastern lands would have a powerful ally, a new trump card. Though revealing who exactly it was wasn’t on the agenda yet.

Three high-ranking bishops from the church came, one among them a famous scholar and researcher in Unique Talents, as they were called.

King Anton Arcquia, dressed in a brown ceremonial gown, continued the meeting. “Bishop Eroben, if you would. Please share what the Church knows about the Authority of Space.”

Eroben, a frail man with spectacles and flat, unhealthy long brown hair, walked clumsily next to the king.

He cleared his throat. “Yes… as you know, among the Unique Talents, there are six Authorities who are granted dominion over a certain discipline. They are the Authorities of… War, Magic, Monsters, Spirits, Time and Space. His Excellency, the High General of the empire’s forces, is War. The First Seat of the Throne, as the demons call him, is Monsters. And now the child you’ve spoken of is Space.”

“What is said about his powers?”

“Well, as his name suggests, his powers have to do with the physical space around him. Head Minister Bertrand, you say you’ve seen a demonstration of his powers already?”

“Yes, I’ve seen strange rooms that only he can go into and store and retrieve things at will. And there was once when he managed to disappear from a room when all exits were locked. And a disruption in the air that changes the direction of objects that are caught in it.”

The other ministers whispered among themselves. The Minister of Finance, Public Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Commerce, and many other disciplines that proposed laws in the kingdom had all taken a break from their duties to attend this meeting. Naturally, the arrival of a Unique Talent would have a strong impact on the standing of the nation in relation to others and the empire. But there could be other applications of his powers in the advancement of technology and commerce. Though from their flat whispers and glazed looks, it seemed they weren’t all that interested. All but the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Commerce.

“From what you and Bishop Eroben said, Lord Bertrand,” the Minister of Commerce said.
